Christmas Gift DIYs

Christmas gifts that are homemade can mean so much more to friends, family and loved ones. Here are some Christmas DIY gift ideas that can be made from pantry staples. They make take up a bit of time to make but are often a more thoughtful and meaningful gift than something you could buy in store!

1. DIY Marshmallows

Create your own marshmallows and store them in a Source Jar to gift to friends and family. We like to use this recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 500 grams white sugar
  • 2/3 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup water mixed with 7tsp gelatin
  • Flavouring of choice (we used vanilla)
  • 50/50 Cornstarch and icing sugar mixture to dust (if desired)
Method:
  • Place the sugar and 2/3 cup of water in a pot on medium high heat and bring to the boil. Swirl gently to evenly cook.
  • Cover the pot with a lid after the sugar is boiling and lower the heat to medium. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  • Remove the lid after 2 minutes and ensure there are no sugar crystals.
  • Cook until sugar syrup reaches 116C or until it reaches firm ball stage. This means that if a drop of syrup is dropped in cold water, it will not dissolve, but form a firm but squishable ball.
  • At this stage, remove the syrup from the heat and place your bloomed gelatine into a mixing bowl. Start to whisk the gelatine whilst slowly pouring in the sugar syrup. After 3-5 minutes on high speed, the marshmallow will begin to form and volumise.
  • Continue mixing and add in your flavour of choice.
  • Prepare a large baking pan by oiling the base and sides. Spoon in the marshmallow mixture and smooth it out. Allow to cool and firm up overnight.
  • Cut the marshmallows into desired shape and dust in cornstarch mixture if you would like them to not be sticky.
  • Place in your airtight Source jar.
You can decorate your source jar however you like and this would make a gorgeous homemade gift paired with some quality cocoa or hot chocolate!
